Criminal / Regulatory Solicitor (EPA Prosecutions)
Location: Manchester (Hybrid Working Available)
Salary: £45,000+ DOE + Bonus
Job Type: Full-Time | Permanent

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Criminal or Regulatory Solicitor to join a specialist litigation team handling Environmental Protection Act (EPA) prosecutions. This role is ideal for a solicitor with criminal prosecution or defence experience who is looking to work on a unique and growing area of law within a supportive, forward-thinking firm.

You will manage your own caseload of Environmental Protection Act prosecutions from inception through to trial or settlement, acting on behalf of tenants and ensuring matters are progressed efficiently while maintaining the highest standards of client care and compliance.

The Role
Working within a specialist team, you will conduct private prosecutions under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 against both private and social landlords. The role offers high levels of autonomy, advocacy opportunities and long-term career progression within an expanding department.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of Environmental Protection Act prosecutions from instruction through to conclusion.
  • Conduct prosecutions under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
  • Ensure compliance with the Criminal Procedure Rules, Magistrates' Courts Act and CPIA 1996.
  • Draft and review Notices of Intended Prosecution.
  • Prepare and approve summons applications and supporting documentation.
  • Review prosecution files and evidence throughout proceedings.
  • Consider Environmental Health Officer reports and evidential material.
  • Review disclosure and Defence Case Statements.
  • Prepare matters for trial, negotiate settlements where appropriate and instruct Counsel when required.
  • Undertake advocacy where appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate case records using the firm's case management system.
  • Build strong relationships with clients, Counsel and other stakeholders.
  • Deliver excellent client care while managing a busy and varied caseload.

About You

  • Qualified Solicitor with Criminal Prosecution or Criminal Defence experience.
  • Strong knowledge of criminal procedure and advocacy.
  • Experience managing your own criminal caseload from pre-charge or pre-plea through to trial.
  • Able to bill work at Grade B or above.
  • Experience using a legal case management system (Proclaim experience advantageous).
  • Excellent drafting, advocacy and negotiation skills.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Confident communicator with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Highly motivated with a proactive approach to client care.
